The task

The e-commerce server of a real estate information provider in the Internet should be centrally operated. It involves a heterogeneous computer environment. Along with local access in the server room, from which the majority of the maintenance work is done, two system support specialists are supposed to have access to the computers in order to monitor these.

Each system support specialist should have access to every server. The distance from the office of the system support specialists should be bridged by a CAT-x route (x = 5, 6, 7).

As a result of high access rates, an expansion of the system on the server side is already being contemplated.

This endeavour would require additional space, which should be made available in the server room by removing the monitors/keyboards/mice.

Deployed hardware and their functions

  Receiver for the extenders via CAT-x cables (equipped with IVT mode)

  Transmitter for the extenders via CAT-x cables (Plug-in module in the ControlCenter 4/n)
• ControlCenter 4/n
  Matrix switch in the server room, basic device for 4 consoles and up to 12 servers (up to 4 simultaneous accesses to the server pool), connection of the server, server selection/administration, expandable by cascading to up to 96 computers (equipped with AdonIS)
• CCP-x
  Compact connection cable to the server (1 cable solution for connecting keyboard, video and mouse); 1, 2, 4, 6 and 9 metre lengths

Advantages

• Flexible control of the server pool via 3 x keyboard, video, mouse
• Space gain in the server room through the elimination of superfluous peripherals
• Need for installation of new cables eliminated by use of the existing CAT-x structure
• Freedom of choice in regard to server usage is retained (heterogeneously grown structures can also be centrally operated)

Multifunctionality through the deployment of just one G&D switch, for instance:

• Password-protected access to the remote consoles with user identification
• Definition of access rights for every user
• AutoLogOff as an automatic access protection
• Computer selection by means of names lists/hot keys
• Easy system adaptation through modular expandability
