How to optimise automation tasks using KVM
created by Martina Bersch
G&D KVM systems for control rooms in industrial applications
KVM systems optimise the application of IT equipment and increase the productivity of humans and machines. With the help of KVM, operators and computers can be separated by moving the IT equipment from the production environment or the control room into a server room. At the same time, the computers are operated remotely – intuitively and in real time, without latency or jolts and as if they were placed next to the workstation.
Good reasons to use KVM in industrial applications
IT-supported structures are deeply rooted in automation. Therefore, powerful computer equipment constitutes the actual backbone of each control room application. The use of a KVM matrix, e.g. the ControlCenter-Compact, improves the IT infrastructure and harmonizes spatially distributed installations. KVM matrix systems switch and distribute computer signals and are used whenever several computers have to be operated remotely via different, simultaneous workstations. They help to house the powerful equipment in separate rooms, since harsh production conditions such as heat, dust, humidity and electromagnetic fields can interfere with the proper functioning of the devices.
It is therefore useful to protect the systems by placing them into air-conditioned server rooms, for example, where they can also be centrally maintained without disturbing work in the production area or the control room. The distance to the control room is bridged by modules that communicate with the KVM matrix. Special components let you create workstation with multiple monitors thus helping operators in control rooms to intuitively monitor processes for several computers simultaneously.
Whether transmission over IP structures or cables, devices in compact or modular design – G&D's KVM matrix systems ControlCenter-Compact, ControlCenter-Digital and ControlCenter-IP offer an effective solution for any technical requirements in the automation industry.
RemoteAccess-CPU – virtualisation and migration into the cloud
With their RemoteAccess-CPU scheduled for 2020, G&D are picking up on the increasing virtualisation of industrial automation since the device will make it possible to seamlessly integrate virtual machines into KVM installations.
With the new modules, you will be able to build hybrid systems with real and virtual infrastructures that are extremely intuitive to use. Operators can select the source they want to switch to from a standardised overview, regardless of whether the computer is placed in the server room or available in the cloud.
Powerful extension systems – latency-free, uncompressed and resistant against interference radiation
The DP1.2-VisionXG system extends the access to computers over distances up to 10,000 m. As a powerful KVM extender, DP1.2-VisionXG extends high-resolution 4K and 8K video signals at 60 Hz – pixel-perfect, uncompressed, without any loss and latency-free.
Transmission takes place over optical fibres, which are resistant against interference radiation thus making the system the ideal choice for industrial applications. But G&D also offer other smaller systems for industrial applications using CAT and fiber optics.
