The KVM Matrix-Grid for complex infrastructures
A KVM Matrix-Grid™ can be used in applications that desire bidirectional access between two or more matrix central units, in which the size of the system requires a network or where, due to redundancies, important connections need to be distributed to multiple KVM matrices.
Bidirectional communication between matrix systems
The matrix grid establishes a bidirectional communication between individual matrix switches. Now systems can be interconnected even more directly to facilitate larger installations. Thus, users are able to operate the system bidirectionally at multiple locations.
For transmission between two matrix systems, the devices are directly connected via I/O ports. Each simultaneous KVM connection going beyond a matrix requires a connection to the grid. To establish communication between the matrices, they are connected to a network that provides access to a shared database.
The systems included in a grid are virtually combined to form one large matrix for the users. Thus, all connected user consoles are able to access all connected computers within a grid. The system automatically takes over the routing of KVM signals by selecting the ideal path through the grid.

Connect various systems
At all expansion stages, digital matrix systems from G&D can be integrated into the matrix grid. This includes the entire DVICenter and ControlCenter-Digital series. Up to 24 matrices can be part of one grid. Within this framework, any topologies are possible (e.g. strand, tree, ring, star, meshed network).
Each KVM connection going beyond a matrix requires a connection to the grid. Here, the I/O ports of the individual matrices are directly connected.
All matrices included in the grid are equal and work decentrally. A database master, which is used to administrate the system, is defined for the entire system. The system is accessed via network connection, which needs to be established for all matrices that are part of the grid. The used IP port can be configured as desired.
First, any device is defined as database master; this step does not require any configurations at the master device. The other matrices included in the matrix grid are configured manually by entering the IP address of the master. Once the IP address is activated, the matrix uses the master database.
Consoles and targets can be wired to any matrix switch within the Matrix-Grid. In a Matrix-Grid, a user console can access any target.
Multiple consoles connected to the same matrix switch can simultaneously use the same grid connection to a target (Multiuser). This also applies to consoles connected to matrix switches within the signal path.
When establishing a connection, the ideal path is automatically routed. Yet, the ideal path is not necessarily the shortest. It is defined according to certain criteria such as cable medium and functions of the matrices involved, the shortest route is only a part of the evaluation criteria.
Examples for topology
Thanks to the bidirectional connection, the G&D matrix grid allows access across locations. When connected via optical fibres, the location can even be several kilometres apart from each other - and in addition to the classic cascade users of all interconnected locations are able to access all systems connected.
Fully connected network
The fully connected network provides the maximum of accesses between individual matrices. In a later step the system automatically takes over the routing of KVM signals by selecting the ideal path through the grid.
